Maine is a wild and diverse state. While much of the human population resides along the coast there is so much to explore in other areas. Waterford is a shining example. In August of 2023 we rented a beautiful home on Keoka Lake which is located a little over an hour drive north of Portland.
I spent most mornings launching my kayak from the dock and paddling the small lake searching for Loons, Eagles and other inhabitants. The morning Loon calls became so routine that any length of time they were silent did not go unnoticed. These sounds were often joined by the calls from the newly fledged Bald Eagle chicks chanting for food. The cacophony of sounds became a chorus playing over and over which brought the lake to life.
Watching the Loons care for their chicks, the calls from the Bald Eagle chicks demanding food from their parents all added to the wildlife experience and provided insight into the daily lives of these amazing animals. This short video shows two recently fledged Bald Eagles requesting food service from mom and dad.
We also took a two hour drive to Boothbay Harbor for a Whale-watching and Puffin tour. Our boat traveled into the bay of Maine through whale feeding grounds where we watched whales surface to breathe. Their tales breached the surface as they dove in search of food. After this we headed North to Eastern Egg Island which is a very small island that serves as a nesting ground for the Atlantic Puffin during the summer. There we saw Caspian Terns, Black Guillemot and the incredibly cute: Atlantic Puffin.
The week visiting Maine was such a fun experience. The variety of wildlife inland versus the ocean was a really interesting contrast and something that is uniquely Maine.
