What to Do at an All-Inclusive Resort? Wake Up Early (If You’re a Bird Nerd)

Most people go to an all-inclusive resort for the unlimited drinks, buffet spreads, and the opportunity to do absolutely nothing for a week. But why waste the morning in bed when you could be out witnessing the real VIPs of the resort—the birds?
At the shoreline, a group of Ruddy Turnstones busily flipped over shells and debris like tiny treasure hunters, each one hoping to find something better than yesterday’s leftovers. A Royal Tern stood nearby, looking regal despite its perpetually windblown crest. Overhead, two Magnificent Frigatebirds cruised effortlessly, while I trudged through the sand like someone who overestimated their fitness level.

Further inland, a Hooded Oriole and White-winged Dove flitted through the resort’s landscaping, darting along the pathways and vanishing into the foliage like feathered escape artists. Meanwhile, a Great Kiskadee struck a pose on a rock near the shore, probably waiting for its moment in the spotlight. Just offshore, a Little Blue Heron and a Tricolored Heron waded through the shallow water, carefully stalking their prey with the patience of seasoned hunters—or at least birds that knew breakfast wasn’t going to serve itself.
With the tide at its lowest around 7 AM, the feeding frenzy was in full swing. Birds combed through the exposed shoreline, taking advantage of easy pickings. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the rare tranquility of the resort before the day’s activities turned the beach into a human zoo. Who needs a spa day when you have a front-row seat to nature’s all-inclusive show?
